Where are the "worthwhile targets" in Switzerland? Which buildings? The spire of the Cathedral in Basel? It would undoubtedly be rebuilt after a catastrophe, as it was after the earthquake in 1356. Or the clock face on the Peterskirche in Zürich – apparently the largest in Europe? It is senseless to single out buildings. Swiss cities are not readily defined in terms of salient buildings and – no one would miss them. The punctum in Basel is the river Rhine, the bend of the Rhine to the north. The punctum in Zürich is the lake. If you pulled the plug and emptied it like a bathtub, Zürich would no longer be Zürich. Possibly it would suffice to rebuild the shoreline in genuinely urban density. The dominance of natural formations would be destroyed. The punctum of Switzerland is its natural formations, whose colonisation, though omnipresent, seeks to be as invisible as possible. Mountain huts, trails and cable cars extend all the way to the top of the Matterhorn. The Matterhorn is much more than a cliché: it is still the most powerful expression of Helvetian urbanity.
